Color Life

Color Meaning

Red

Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. Red is a very emotionally intense color. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. It has very high visibility, which is why stop signs, stoplights, and fire equipment are usually painted red. In heraldry, red is used to indicate courage. It is a color found in many national flags. Red brings text and images to the foreground. Use it as an accent color to stimulate people to make quick decisions; it is a perfect color for 'Buy Now' or 'Click Here' buttons on Internet banners and websites. In advertising, red is often used to evoke erotic feelings (red lips, red nails, red-light districts, 'Lady in Red', etc). Red is widely used to indicate danger (high voltage signs, traffic lights). This color is also commonly associated with energy, so you can use it when promoting energy drinks, games, cars, items related to sports and high physical activity. Light red represents joy, sexuality, passion, sensitivity, and love. Pink signifies romance, love, and friendship. It denotes feminine qualities and passiveness. Dark red is associated with vigor, willpower, rage, anger, leadership, courage, longing, malice, and wrath. Brown suggests stability and denotes masculine qualities. Reddish-brown is associated with harvest and fall.

Orange

Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation.
To the human eye, orange is a very hot color, so it gives the sensation of heat. Nevertheless, orange is not as aggressive as red. Orange increases oxygen supply to the brain, produces an invigorating effect, and stimulates mental activity. It is highly accepted among young people. As a citrus color, orange is associated with healthy food and stimulates appetite. Orange is the color of fall and harvest. In heraldry, orange is symbolic of strength and endurance.
Orange has very high visibility, so you can use it to catch attention and highlight the most important elements of your design. Orange is very effective for promoting food products and toys.
Dark orange can mean deceit and distrust.
Red-orange corresponds to desire, sexual passion, pleasure, domination, aggression, and thirst for action.
Gold evokes the feeling of prestige. The meaning of gold is illumination, wisdom, and wealth. Gold often symbolizes high quality.

Yellow

Yellow is the color of sunshine. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy.
Yellow produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity, and generates muscle energy. Yellow is often associated with food. Bright, pure yellow is an attention getter, which is the reason taxicabs are painted this color. When overused, yellow may have a disturbing effect; it is known that babies cry more in yellow rooms. Yellow is seen before other colors when placed against black; this combination is often used to issue a warning. In heraldry, yellow indicates honor and loyalty. Later the meaning of yellow was connected with cowardice.
Use yellow to evoke pleasant, cheerful feelings. You can choose yellow to promote children's products and items related to leisure. Yellow is very effective for attracting attention, so use it to highlight the most important elements of your design. Men usually perceive yellow as a very lighthearted, 'childish' color, so it is not recommended to use yellow when selling prestigious, expensive products to men – nobody will buy a yellow business suit or a yellow Mercedes. Yellow is an unstable and spontaneous color, so avoid using yellow if you want to suggest stability and safety. Light yellow tends to disappear into white, so it usually needs a dark color to highlight it. Shades of yellow are visually unappealing because they loose cheerfulness and become dingy.
Dull (dingy) yellow represents caution, decay, sickness, and jealousy.
Light yellow is associated with intellect, freshness, and joy.

Green

Green is the color of nature. It symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety. Dark green is also commonly associated with money.
Green has great healing power. It is the most restful color for the human eye; it can improve vision. Green suggests stability and endurance. Sometimes green denotes lack of experience; for example, a 'greenhorn' is a novice. In heraldry, green indicates growth and hope. Green, as opposed to red, means safety; it is the color of free passage in road traffic.
Use green to indicate safety when advertising drugs and medical products. Green is directly related to nature, so you can use it to promote 'green' products. Dull, darker green is commonly associated with money, the financial world, banking, and Wall Street.
Dark green is associated with ambition, greed, and jealousy.
Yellow-green can indicate sickness, cowardice, discord, and jealousy.
Aqua is associated with emotional healing and protection.
Olive green is the traditional color of peace.

Blue

Blue is the color of the sky and sea. It is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven.
Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body. It slows human metabolism and produces a calming effect. Blue is strongly associated with tranquility and calmness. In heraldry, blue is used to symbolize piety and sincerity.
You can use blue to promote products and services related to cleanliness (water purification filters, cleaning liquids, vodka), air and sky (airlines, airports, air conditioners), water and sea (sea voyages, mineral water). As opposed to emotionally warm colors like red, orange, and yellow; blue is linked to consciousness and intellect. Use blue to suggest precision when promoting high-tech products.
Blue is a masculine color; according to studies, it is highly accepted among males. Dark blue is associated with depth, expertise, and stability; it is a preferred color for corporate America.
Avoid using blue when promoting food and cooking, because blue suppresses appetite. When used together with warm colors like yellow or red, blue can create high-impact, vibrant designs; for example, blue-yellow-red is a perfect color scheme for a superhero.
Light blue is associated with health, healing, tranquility, understanding, and softness.
Dark blue represents knowledge, power, integrity, and seriousness.

 Purple

Purple combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. Purple is associated with royalty. It symbolizes power, nobility, luxury, and ambition. It conveys wealth and extravagance. Purple is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic.
According to surveys, almost 75 percent of pre-adolescent children prefer purple to all other colors. Purple is a very rare color in nature; some people consider it to be artificial.
Light purple is a good choice for a feminine design. You can use bright purple when promoting children's products.
Light purple evokes romantic and nostalgic feelings.
Dark purple evokes gloom and sad feelings. It can cause frustration.

White

White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. It is considered to be the color of perfection.
White means safety, purity, and cleanliness. As opposed to black, white usually has a positive connotation. White can represent a successful beginning. In heraldry, white depicts faith and purity.
In advertising, white is associated with coolness and cleanliness because it's the color of snow. You can use white to suggest simplicity in high-tech products. White is an appropriate color for charitable organizations; angels are usually imagined wearing white clothes. White is associated with hospitals, doctors, and sterility, so you can use white to suggest safety when promoting medical products. White is often associated with low weight, low-fat food, and dairy products.

Black

Black is associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery.
Black is a mysterious color associated with fear and the unknown (black holes). It usually has a negative connotation (blacklist, black humor, 'black death'). Black denotes strength and authority; it is considered to be a very formal, elegant, and prestigious color (black tie, black Mercedes). In heraldry, black is the symbol of grief.
Black gives the feeling of perspective and depth, but a black background diminishes readability. A black suit or dress can make you look thinner. When designing for a gallery of art or photography, you can use a black or gray background to make the other colors stand out. Black contrasts well with bright colors. Combined with red or orange – other very powerful colors – black gives a very aggressive color scheme

Your Brain IQ

The average IQ (intelligence quotient) is 100, with the vast majority of people scoring right around that number. Only about 2 to 3 percent of people score above 130 or below 70. An IQ of 130 is considered the threshold for giftedness.
While we don't know if Albert Einstein, arguably the most famous genius, ever took an IQ test, his IQ has been said to be near 160. Steven Hawking and Bill Gates have also been said to have an IQ of 160.
Early Development
Our brains still grow through much of childhood. In fact, when we are born, our brain is only one pound; and by age 6, it weighs in at 3 pounds. Thanks to this growth process, our brains are very susceptible to our environment. Studies have shown that babies who are breast fed may gain up to 10 IQ points later in life, while children who are fed junk food under the age of three tend to have lower IQs later in life.
Heredity
Though environment does have some effect on IQ, heredity has shown to be responsible for 40 to 80 percent of a person's IQ.
Effects of Low IQ
People with a lower than average IQ are 88 times more likely to drop out of high school. They are also 7 times more likely to go to jail and 5 more likely to live in poverty than those with a higher than average IQ. Certain studies have also shown a link between low IQ and suicidal tendencies.
Job Outlook
If you have an IQ of 115 or higher, it seems you can have your pick of any job, those with a high IQ are better equipped to deal with the complexities of higher level jobs than those with a lower IQ. Also, those with a high IQ are more productive workers.
Social Skills
Many of us have a picture in our brains of people with high IQs being social hermits locked away reading and studying, but that usually isn't true. The fact is that having a high IQ generally gives someone confidence, which translates into the ability to interact well with people. The general rule in our society is that high IQ doesn't only lead to professional success, but to social success as well.
Massive Brain
There has been some correlation found between larger brain size and a higher IQ.

Addictive Life

Caffeine

Though perfectly legal everywhere in the world, there is no denying that caffeine (a drug) is one addictive substance. In fact, it is probably the most-used drug in the world. Caffeine acts as a nervous system stimulant, as anyone who regularly has morning coffee can tell you. After frequent use, the body of a coffee drinker (or caffeine consumer of any kind) becomes dependent on the substance and will experience withdrawal symptoms if it goes too long without a fix.

Alcohol is a legal substance that, when used in moderation, can pose little to no problems for most people. But for heavy drinkers, the substance can be quite addictive. Studies have shown that 7% of the U.S. population is addicted to or abusing alcohol. Alcohol impairs brain function and has withdrawal symptoms that are so dangerous they can actually be fatal

Nicotine

Nicotine in tobacco is just as addictive as cocaine, according to studies. Though it is legal, it has a similar effect on the brain as cocaine does. Just as cocaine users, smokers may experience withdrawal symptoms about two to three hours after their last drag, making it very hard to quit this annoying and deadly habit.

Heroin

It's no surprise that heroin is probably the most addictive illegal drug, with at least 25% of people who have ever used it once becoming addicted. There are an estimated 50 million people who are regular users of this party drug across the globe, largely due to the euphoria experienced when it is injected. Unfortunately that euphoria is short-lived, and withdrawal effects can start as soon as two hours after your last dose of the drug. Many users are led down a dark road that never ends favorably.

Cocaine

Cocaine is very similar to heroin in that it has a very short high and a very quick onset of withdrawal symptoms, sometimes within one to two hours after your last dose, with symptoms starting at body aches, vomiting and diarrhea and turning into much more.

Amphetamines

Crystal meth is the most common recreational form of amphetamine. It causes a temporary alertness and allows you to stay awake for long periods of time. The drug has a number of detrimental side effects, including violent mood swings, nervous system damage and even death. Great care needs to be taken to break a meth addiction.

Adderall and other similar ADHD drugs are also amphetamines and should be taken with care and never quit cold turkey.

Oxycodone

Oxycodone is the basis of Percocet and Oxycontin. Ironically, it was originally intended to be a non-addictive alternative to morphine as a pain relieving drug, but it turns out it is just as if not more addictive.

Valium and Benzodiazepines

Valium and "benzos," such as Xanax, are prescription drugs that used to treat anxiety. Valium has been known to trigger addiction with just one dose. Doctors always recommend tapering off these drugs very slowly to avoid sever anxiety attacks, hence, the tendency towards addiction.

Methadone

Methadone was intended to help those trying to quit heroin deal with the withdrawal, but it has proven to be quite an addictive drug itself, in some cases more addictive than the heroin. In reality, you are just trading an illegal drug for a legal one and are still left addicted.

Sugar

You are probably wondering why something as innocent as sugar is on a list with hard drugs, but studies have shown that sugar is more addictive than cocaine. Though it isn't an opiate, of course, and doesn't have the horrible side effects of drugs, when we eat sugar, it causes the brain to release what is called endogenous opiates. Our body wants more of these natural opiates, so we have sugar cravings, sometimes intense ones.

The addictive nature of sugar has become apparent in the United States over the years: in 1822, the average American consumed about 6.3 pounds of sugar a year, and now that figure is closer to 107.7 pounds of sugar a year. This number is still rising!

“Inattention Blindness”

This is an example of what is called “inattention blindness” or “change blindness”. The idea is that people often miss large changes in their visual field. This has been shown in many experiments. So what does this mean if you are designing a website or something on a computer screen? It means that you can’t assume that just because something is on the screen means that people see it. This is especially true when you refresh a screen and make one change on it. People may not realize they are even looking at a different screen. Remember, just because something happens in the visual field doesn’t mean that people are consciously aware of it.

Honey of Skin

Honey is known for all of its amazing benefits but in case you have forgotten just how many amazing things that honey can do for you, here is a quick little reminder. Just remember, it does not benefit you solely internally, but also externally! Let’s see how:
Heavy Duty Moisturizer: Honey is known to be a heavy-duty moisturizer that will continue to keep you hydrated and moisturized much longer than most lotions and creams, and without the negative effects of leaving your skin feeling greasy or oily when used. Protects Skin: Honey protects the skin from damage by acting as a shield against outside factors, such as a dirty environment or over exposure to the sun. Honey cannot stop the damage that too much sun can cause, but it can absorb a bit of the initial exposure to minimize some of the damage. Promotes Faster Healing: Honey promotes faster healing on and within the skin, minimizing skin damage more quickly and helping the skin look better faster than other products. Extra Nutrients: Honey is one of the most effective ways to add extra nutrients to your skin that it desperately needs. Eating a healthy diet is one great way to get these nutrients, but honey has a well-balanced set of nutrients that can help your skin become healthy in a much shorter amount of time. Antibacterial Effects: Honey has antibacterial effects which will help your skin to fight bacteria that it comes in contact with or that comes from within the body and skin, such as acne. These effects will help put up a greater defense against all forms of bacteria for as long as you keep using it. Honey Lots of Antioxidants: Honey has a huge amount of antioxidants that can help slow the effects of aging considerably. Honey is even thought to be one of the gifts Mother Nature created as her own version of the Fountain of Youth. Honey is one of those ingredients that can do it all and should not be overlooked. It has the power to help skin where it is lacking and heal the body in ways that other products simply cannot do. If your house does not have a cute little teddy bear dispenser in it yet, then make sure to buy some at the grocery store and place it right in your bathroom, next to your cleanser and moisturizer! Honey is sweet…in so many ways!

College Traditions

Midnight Breakfast

What better way is there to prepare for the first day of finals at Bernard College than by meeting up at midnight for a breakfast of epic proportions?

Bladderball

Check this out. This Yale tradition, which started in 1954, involves student teams vying for control of a six-foot inflatable ball. Administration officials banned it because the students kept falling into and disrupting traffic, but "revival games" continue to this day.

Hump It Aggies

All Texas A & M sporting events are celebrated during the game via a dance wherein students bend over, place their hands on their knees, stick out their booties and yell, "Hump it Aggies!"

Primal Scream

At approximately 10pm, on the night prior to the beginning of finals, students at Careleton College stick their heads out their windows and scream away all their pain, anguish and frustration, after which they return to studying.

Wacky Walk

Hate boring commencement marches? Then attend Stanford, where you'll end your journey with a "Wacky Walk" in which you and your peers strut your success while wearing creative outfits!

Pumpkin Drop

The folks at MIT are into way more than just computers. They're also into dropping pumpkins from a roof on Halloween night. Why? To study the physics of falling objects, of course

Little 500

The Little 500 represents a week chockablock with concerts, parties and a full-fledged college bike race celebrated at Indiana University every April.

Ledyard Challenge

The folks at Dartmouth are no joke. Twice a year, students strip and then try to swim from the New Hampshire side of the Connecticut River to the Concord side. Once they reach it, they then must return back by foot.

Ditch Day

Every year, during the spring, all the seniors at Caltech suddenly disappear from campus and leave behind super-duper complex puzzles, mazes and other challenges for the school's underclassmen (FRESHMEN!) to complete.

Mirror Lake Jump

Though discouraged by administrators to participate, many Ohio State University students amass at Mirror Lake on the night before an Ohio State vs. Michigan football game. Why? So they can risk hypothermia and death by jumping into a frozen lake.

Serenading

Hate Christmas carolers? Then stay away from Vassar College, where every year students walk through campus, battle singing and, of course, lacing one another with ketchup and water balloons!

Hoop Rolling

There's nothing quite like hundreds of Wellesley College female students gathering together to race their hoops -- and we don't mean their earrings!

Birthday Fountain Dunking

Wish people would notice your birthdays more? Then you'll love Occidental College, where your peers are apt to surprise you by kidnapping you and then dunking your birthday butt in the Oxy Fountain!

Toast Toss

After the competion of the 3rd quarter of football games, University of Pennsylvania students gather together to sing "Drink a Highball" and toss toast -- so as to "toast" their team -- into the air.

 Naked Quad Run

The Naked Quad Run at Tufts University allows students a once-in-a-lifetime moment to literally run naked laps around the Rez Quad building on the last night of classes prior to finals week

What You Can do at Coca Cola

Coca-Cola has been around for over 100 years, since 1886. It was first used as medicine and was claimed to cure many ailments, including impotence. Through the years, Coca-Cola has become the most popular soft drink in the world, but, did you know it has other uses besides refreshing us on a hot day?

  • Tired of scraping off that pesky ice from your windshield during winter? Simply pour a can of Regular Coke over it and wait. You'll be amazed!
  • Have you ever heard that the only way to soothe a jellyfish sting is to pee on it? This is not only gross, but untrue. Instead, pour some Coca-Cola over the sting. The relief will be almost instantaneous.
  • Coca-Cola contains citric acid, which makes it the perfect glass and window cleaner. No more harsh chemicals, just pour Coke over your windows and wipe them down with a moistened cloth.
  • The crud that accumulates around the terminals of your car battery can be removed by pouring Coke over them, letting it sit for a few minutes, and then hosing off the residue. For extra hard spots, simply use a sponge to rub off the gunk.
  • If you find your garden overrun by slugs and other bugs during the Spring and Summer months, pour some Coke into small containers and set them out in your yard. The sugar will attract the bugs and the acid in the Coke will kill them. This works on roaches too.
  • Once in a while you may find that you, or your pet, came too close to a skunk and got sprayed. Using tomato juice might be effective but it's messy and hard to clean. Instead, pour Coke all over yourself or your pet while in the shower, make sure to use a lot, so all areas are covered. Wait for a few minutes and then rinse off. You will smell fresh and clean once you're done, and so will your pet.
  • To remove those ugly stains, simply pour Regular Coke into your toilet bowl over the dirty areas and wait for 10 minutes. The acid in the Coke will break up even the most difficult stains
  • The boys went fishing and now their clothing smells so bad you want to throw it out? Salvage stinky clothing by pouring some Coke on your laundry during the wash cycle.
  • For perfect curls, even if your hair is straight, leave an open can of Coke out overnight. Then pour it over your long hair and let it sit for a few minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

    Raspberry Tiramisu

    Ingredients
1 8 ounce package mascarpone cheese
    1/2 cup sugar
    1 1/2 cups heavy cream
    1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
40 or so store bought lady fingers
18 ounce jar seedless raspberry jam juice of
2 lemons raspberries, a lot, as many as you can get

     1. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together mascarpone and sugar. Add a bit of cream and mix until combined. About NUTELLA

If you're looking for the perfect reason to celebrate with a jar of Nutella, you should take full advantage of World Nutella Day on February 5! The holiday was first celebrated by two American women living in Italy back in 2007.

In a single day, over 70 million hazelnuts are used in the production of Nutella worldwide. That's a lot of nuts!

Nutella may be new to some of us, but it's actually been around for decades! It was originally introduced to the market back in 1963, but the hazelnut spread wasn't brought to the United States until 1983!

Before it was given the name Nutella, it was sold by the name Supercrema. That's a fitting name, because Nutella is definitely a super cream!

If you took all of the Nutella produced in a single day and poured it into a massive container, it would be almost three times the weight of the Statue of Liberty. That's heavy!

Every 13 ounce container of Nutella contains more than 50 hazelnuts!

    Deal With Jealousy

    Examine Yourself

Almost everyone deals with jealousy in a relationship at some point in their life, but learning to deal with it is an important step that many people never take. It's amazing how much more relaxing a relationship becomes once you're able to work through this ugly emotion. Use the tips in this gallery, and you'll be free of jealousy in no time!
The first step in dealing with jealousy is to examine yourself and determine why you're having these feelings. Most jealous people tend to think that there's nothing wrong with their own behavior and criticize their partners instead. Pay close attention to your own behavior, and think about events in your past. Here are a few common reasons why you might get jealous

    Introduce All Your Friends

Even if you doubt your significant other is cheating on you, it's still possible to be jealous of the time he/she spends with other people. To avoid this, you both should introduce each other to all of your friends. When you personally know all the people your partner is with, then it becomes a little harder to imagine those wild and crazy scenarios that jealousy fabricates. It also should reduce the fear of cheating because you're not keeping secrets from each other.

    Talk It Out

Just like any other situation in a relationship, the easiest solution is just to talk about it. There's no better tool in a relationship than good communication, so try talking to your partner about your jealousy. Express how you deeply care for your partner and try to work out a solution with him/her. If the relationship is a good one, then this talk should only strengthen your bond. If not, then it probably wasn't going to work out in the long term anyway.

    Turn the Tables

A jealous person often has a hard time explaining their emotions without getting upset, so the best method is to turn the tables on the situation. If you're usually the jealous type, ask a friend of the opposite sex to flirt with you in front of your partner. This will allow your partner to better understand how you feel if you just can't get your feelings across in another way. Just be aware that this method could cause some conflict, so only use it if regular communication fails.

    Learn to Trust

Trust is crucial to a good relationship, and enough trust will actually cancel out your jealousy. Slowly allow your partner to have more freedom without you asking about every detail. After a while, most of the little things that used to annoy you won't even cross your mind. It's okay to be a little possessive to show that you care, but being able to distance yourself and trust that he/she will be faithful is extremely important.

    Improve Yourself

If you're always worried about someone else stealing away your significant other, then it's probably because you're insecure about yourself. Put some effort into improving yourself by doing these things and more:

    Be Flattered

Lastly, you should learn to be flattered if other people are attracted to your partner. If people hit on your partner at the bar (and he/she rejects them), then just take it as a compliment. You're the one going home with the person that attracted so many other people. Walk out of there at the end of the night like a boss!

Wisdom comes from our journey. ENJOY the ride :p

    Peanut-butter Solution for Empty Jar

    1. Peel off the paper / plastic coating (No need to be perfect here)
    2. Run the offending jar through the dishwasher in an attempt to get rid of some of the offending glue (I opted to just run my jar under warm water and scrub it with a scrub brush to get rid of the paper).
    3. Rub a thin layer of PEANUT BUTTER over all of the stickered (Is that a word?) areas.
    4. Leave the jar and peanut butter alone for 10-15 minutes.
    5. Rub off the peanut butter and use the abrasive side of a soapy sponge to scrub off the remaining sticker goo while running it under warm water
    6. Ola…sticker free jar!

Optional: for a darker color, stir in 1-2 drops of red food coloring.
Divide cherry pudding between 3-4 serving dishes. Set aside while you make the chocolate pudding.

Divide chocolate pudding between 3-4 serving dishes, layering it on top of the cherry pudding. Serve warm or chilled. Garnish with a cherry on top, a mint leaf, or fresh whipped cream, if you wish.
If you do not wish for a skin to form on top of the pudding as it chills, cover the surface of the pudding with plastic wrap.

Eggplant, Tomatoes, Onions and Chilies from my garden.

    Method

You simply boil or steam the eggplant, tomato and potato. Peel the potatoes, then mash everybody else together skin and all. Finely chop a medium onion, a chili pepper or two and a handful of cilantro leaves. Chop this garnish really fine as you don’t want to bite into chunky pieces of raw onion or chili. Mix the garnish into the mash. Add salt to taste and squeeze the juice of ½ a small lemon.

Please take note, even though this is not a sophisticated dish, follow the proportions indicated in the picture. Too many tomatoes will make it runny and too much eggplant will change flavor.

    Food Notes

I boil and steam the veggies simultaneously in an Indian style pressure cooker. I put the potatoes in water in a stainless steel bowl and set it in the the cooker. Then I put a steam rack on top of this bowl with the eggplant and tomatoes on it. This way the eggplant and tomatoes hold their juices inside while the potato cooks perfectly in water.

    500 startUP

It’s a big day for 500 Startups — you know, the seed-stage accelerator and capital fund founded by rabble rouser and geek on a plane, Dave McClure. Back in July 2010, McClure filed for the accelerator’s first fund, raising $30 million to begin officially investing in startups under the new venture capital fund. Today, we’ve learned via SEC regulatory filing that round two is officially on the books, and 500 Startups is going bigger for its second round, raising $50 million.
McClure and company are also today announcing an expansion of the team, as Paul Singh and Christen O’Brien have been promoted to partners. Singh will continue to lead investments, running the accelerator program, and acting as head Data/Metrics guru, while O’Brien continues on her role as head of business development, leading events and conferences, like Geeks On A Plane, Warm Gun, etc. Bedy Yang and George Kellerman have also joined as venture partners.
Yang will be overseeing investments in Brazil and Latin America, while Kellerman will be scouting emerging talent in Japan. The group of four join existing partners Christine Tsai and McClure, and highlight not only the fact that 500 Startups is no longer a one-person show, but that the team has not only been diversifying, but increasing its focus on identifying and investing in international talent.
In speaking with the Tsai and McClure, the founder was quick to point out that 500 Startups is no longer just an accelerator, but also a set of conferences, and a fund that invests not only in companies of its choosing but those of other accelerators as well. Of the some 257 investments 500 Startups has made to date, McClure says that more than 50 of those have been in other accelerators, including 25 from Y Combinator, 15 from TechStars, 5 from Seedcamp, 3 AngelPad companies, and 3 from Startmeet.
While 10 to 15 percent of the fund’s current investments are in international startups, the partners said that, with the new $50 million fund, this will be increasing in the future, as it looks to build upon its investments in accelerators in Mexico City and Beijing, and beyond. For example, the team held a Geeks On A Plane trip to India in December of last year, and intends to continue focusing on Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe, both for Geeks On A Plane and in terms of investments, looking to build ties in those ecosystems.
In October, the accelerator and fund peeled back the curtain on its third batch of startups, which included 34 companies, making it the largest roster to date (the initial batch consisted of 12 startups and the second came in at 21). Our coverage also touches on 500 Startups’ growing domestic and international diversity. You can also check out 500 Startups video here. The accelerator’s fourth batch kicked off a few days ago, and we’ll have more on those companies soon.
But another thing that’s interesting to note is that the accelerator is rolling out a new program that enables its mentors to co-invest in its accelerator companies — something that not many other accelerators or capital funds are doing at this point. Co-investing is not required for mentors, and all startups get the final say on which mentors can participate, but it’s a great opportunity for startups to get strategic angels on board, and conversely, an opportunity for mentors to invest in fast-growing stages early in their trajectory.
500 Startups is also adding to its conference brigade, with a new event to be held on Friday April 20th, called MamaBear, which will be a one-day even focused on new technology for moms, kids, and families, with speakers representing companies like BabyCenter, Disney, Sesame Street, Plum District, MindSnacks and more.

    Fitness Survey Why People WorkOut

61% say fitting in exercise is stress fest

So bang it out first thing in the morning. Getting up at 6 a.m. will blow initially, but deadlines, bosses and happy hours will be way less likely to derail your workout. And after about four weeks of early rising, you get used to it. Seriously!

71% say hardly ever try a new routine

Sweating but not slimming? The problem may be doing the same thing over and over. Your body adapts to a workout in about a month, says Michael Olzinski, an exercise physiologist and fitness manager for Equinox in New York City, after which you see diminishing returns instead of diminishing thighs. Every four weeks, change it up to see change.

58% of your push for that post-work out "I killed it" feeling

To keep crushing it, give muscles TLC, using a foam roller for 10 minutes after exercise. You'll reduce inflammation and trigger the production of new mitochondria, the power plants of your cells, a recent McMaster University study reports

    45% sweat to drop pounds

Have a game day. Make them calorie-obliterating, all-out sessions, where you push yourself to the max, Olzinski says. Run at a faster clip or try a bunch of truly breathless intervals. Aim for one or two a week, then use your other workouts as recovery or prep. Go for an easy run, take a toning class or try a quick routine. Those "easy" days will give your body a breather and make you stronger so you'll be able to push harder—and sizzle more—during challenging ones.

    22% want to sculpt muscles

Lift heavy. We're talking 10-pounders or higher. "To look toned, you've got to build muscle density, and you can't do that with wimpy weights," says Lisa Feldermann, personal-training manager at Blink Fitness in NYC. You're using the right size when your last two reps make you feel like letting out a Game of Thrones–like warrior cry. Not sure how big to go? Err on the side of tough girl. You can always switch, but you might shock yourself with your greatness.

    19% move to stay healthy

Focus your focus. Ensure that you'll be hitting the gym from today until forever (and banking the better-body benefits) by thinking about why exercise is a positive part of your life—it keeps you sane, it energizes you, whatever—researchers say. That's instead of fixating on the physical payoff such as losing 10 pounds or looking hot in a clingy Hervé Léger. Valid objectives, sure, but the desire to achieve them can fade faster than a Brazilian blowout.

    84% heart dumbbell

So try this. During strength moves, hold a weight that's 4 or 5 pounds heavier than the other in one hand, Olzinski suggests. The difference throws you off balance, forcing you to recruit more ab muscles to stabilize. It also preps you to function in real life. Ever lift two equally heavy shopping bags at once? Didn't think so. Switch up the weights after each set.
And this! For crunches and bridges, Olzinski recommends squeezing a 3-pound dumbbell between your knees to downsize your inner thighs while you flatten your abs and tighten your tush.
And what about this?! Hold two light 'bells (ahem, 5-pounders) in one hand during a move, switching hands after each set. Doing this improves grip strength, making it easier to manage heavier weights as you get stronger, Olzinski says.

    50% tone tummy trumps all

Take a seat: Yogi Mandy Ingber put a twist on the Chair pose to help whittle her friend Jen's waist. Stand with legs together, palms in prayer position. Bend knees until thighs are almost parallel to floor, as if sinking into a chair (Chair pose). Twist torso to right, placing left elbow outside right knee. Hold 5 counts. Return to Chair. Repeat on left side for 1 rep. Do 3 sets of 10 reps.

45% of you shake your booty on zumba

Shimmy smarter. "My grandma can Zumba, but if you dance like her, you're not going to accomplish much!" Feldermann says. "Make all movements count. Jump high, really swing your arms, and shake it like you mean it."
What's new: Zumba Fitness Core, an Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii game that fuses jazz, Brazilian funk and African dance to "party your abs off." (Preorder now; it's out next month!)

    29% prefer fast-and-sweaty boot camps

Get it right. "People think moving high-speed is better, but it's not if your form is jacked," says Robert Morales, owner of Krank Systems in Jersey City, New Jersey. Make sure yours is aces; ask your "drill sergeant" for cues.
What's new: Core Camp at Life Time Fitness (LifeTimeFitness.com). It's the fat-punishing, nonstop drills you love, and it's designed to declare war on pesky belly flab.

24% love riding  at the cycling studio

Pedal like a pro. Don't slack off during recovery and transition periods. Coasting can cost you more than 50 unburned calories per class!
What's new: Cycle Clinic at David Barton Gym (DavidBartonGym.com). Learn the most efficient pedal stroke and body position for max power (and calorie) output.

61% feel friskier when your in shape

Mentally replay a hot tryst while you work out to run faster, lift more and generally up your oomph in the gym. "Racy thoughts increase heart rate and blood flow, which can increase energy and Performance," says Linda Young, Ph.D., a psychologist in The Woodlands, Texas

70% of your set a goal to get psyched

Be creative to stick to them. Rewards are great, but penalties can be an even stronger motivator, Feldermann says. When setting goals, come up with a few punishments for missing your mark. Make a pact with a friend that the first one to blow off boot camp buys the first round on Friday night. Like hell you'll skip a session!
